If you've ever been to NYC and have yet to experience the glory that is Doughnut Plant, well, you're missing out. You're also missing out if you've never watched "Ugly Betty" because that's where I first discovered the shop. On one of my first trips to New York, I came across a chocolate lover's dream...the Blackout doughnut. Ever since the first bite of gooey goodness, I've been dreaming about the next best doughnut shop for a foodie like me. After all, I'm in Southern California and my breakfast-pastry paradise is 2,783 miles away.
But then I stumbled upon the closest thing -- Sidecar Doughnuts & Coffee.
Sidecar sure does give Doughnut Plant a run for their money. If you're looking for something that is fresher and fancier than Donut Star or DK's, give Sidecar a shot. From sweet and tangy hints of huckleberry or lavender, to savory maple-glazed bacon bars, they really have it all. If you are feeling ballsy, I would recommend ordering whatever is hot. Nothing beats a warm glob of deep fried dough!
Only ten minutes from the beach, Sidecar Doughnuts & Coffee brings a Southern California feel to a Policeman's ideal sweet. While it may not have the New York atmosphere, the teeny shop in Costa Mesa does provide an indulgent escape...until you realize the parking lot is impossible to deal with. So come at an off hour and bring your appetite!
